Numerical modeling of tides, currents and waves off Maharashtra coast

چکیده
A two-dimensional finite element numerical model has been developed to simulate tide and wave characteristics for Maharashtra coastal region, India. The region was divided into four zones based on water depth and the Chezy’s friction coefficient values for each zone were determined. It was noticed that as the water depth decreases the values of friction coefficient increases. Results are validated with observed tidal elevations, currents and significant wave height at various locations. Prediction of the amplitude and phase of tides showed good agreement in most locations. Trends of the variation of wave heights with distance from the coast appears to be similar along different sections along the coastline, however, the wave heights at any particular location is observed to be function of local water depths. Hydrodynamic modeling setup forms a base for modeling of various coastal process and man-made disaster such as oil spill, in future.

The depth average module of NASIR finite volume solver was applied to study the tide induced currents in Khowr-e-Musa estuary. The model computes water level variation and velocity components in horizontal plane solving depth average continuity and momentum equations considering the hydrostatic pressure distribution. The regional waters in Singapore Strait are characterized by complex hydrodynamic phenomena as a result of the combined effect of three large water bodies viz. the South China Sea, the Andaman Sea, and the Java Sea. This leads to anomalies in water levels and generates residual currents. Numerical hydrodynamic models are generally used for predicting water levels in the ocean and seas. But thei...
متن کاملHydrodynamic Modelling of Coral Reefs:Ningaloo Reef-Western Australia
As with all coral reef systems, the ecology of Ningaloo Reef is closely linked to water circulation which transport and disperse key material such as nutrients and larvae. Circulation on coral reefs may be driven by a number of forcing mechanisms including waves, tides, wind, and buoyancy effects. Surface waves interacting with reefs have long been known to dominate the currents on many coral r...

Wind driven oceanic surface waves have a major impact on marine activity, especially near the coastal regions. Strong winds associated with winter storms induce storm surges along the west coast of Japan. Combined high wind conditions, tides, and storm surges can have a tremendous impact on the surface wave fields. Accurate wave forecast becomes an important issue at various operational forecas...
